Set in the 1930's during the rise of the independence struggles against British colonial rule, the film examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi.

This Toronto-based director has earned international attention with her films. She is considered by many as one of the finest new directors on the horizon. With films such as the trilogy that consists of Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005), she is quickly becoming the voice of a new India.
